Mary K. Girard

Mary K. Girard, 83, of 13 Simon Ave. died Friday afternoon at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Canaan, Conn., on April 8, 1919, daughter of Stefano and Rosa Belini Smachetti, she lived in Torrington, Conn. until she was five. Her family moved to Adams and she graduated from the former Adams High School in 1938. Mrs. Girard was employed as a secretary by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams for 20 years, retiring in 1981. She also had been employed as a secretary by the former Brightwater Paper Co. in Adams for several years and by GE in Pittsfield for several years. She was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas, where she worked at bingo games and was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne Society. She also was a member of the former Notre Dame School PTA and the Adams Senior Citizens, and enjoyed cooking, knitting and gardening. Her husband, Leo Girard, whom she married Feb. 16, 1946, in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, died Jan. 12, 1984. She leaves three sons, Gerald Girard of New Hampshire, Michael Girard of Hinsdale and Richard Girard of Adams; a daughter, Susan Sobon of Windsor; two sisters, Elizabeth Shaw and Rose Volpi, both of Adams, and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be celebrated Saturday, April 20, at 10 in Notre Dame Church by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parish of Notre Dame and St. Thomas Aquinas. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours at TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
