Mitchell Shapiro

Mitchell Leonard Shapiro, 47, of Bisbee, Ariz., formerly of Housatonic and Great Barrington, died April 8 at home of natural causes. Born in Danbury, Conn., on June 20, 1954, son of Hilda Banks Shapiro and the late Leonard Shapiro, he graduated from Litchfield (Conn.) High School. He moved to Arizona 1 1/2 years ago. Mr. Shapiro was a master carpenter, furniture maker and sculptor. He and his brother, Jason S. Shapiro, were proprietors of the Green River Trading Co. store in Lenox in 1996. He was a prolific letter writer, a fan of big band music and was known for his creative practical jokes. An avid reader, he patronized the Ramsdell Library in Housatonic. He had a large collection of unusual antiques and memorabilia. Besides his mother, of Great Barrington, he leaves six brothers, Andre Shapiro of Tigard, Ore., Mark Shapiro of Northfield, Conn., Jonathan, Jason and Samuel Shapiro, all of Great Barrington, and David Shapiro of Millerton, N.Y.; five sisters, Serena Shapiro of Roslindale, Karen Shapiro of Free Union, Va., Claudia Shapiro of Great Barrington, Miriam Shapiro of North Egremont and Stephanie Shapiro of San Antonio and Ann Arbor, Mich. The family asks that random acts of kindness be done in lieu of donations or flowers.
