Elmer E. Wright

Elmer E. "Al" Wright, 88, of Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of Great Barrington, died April 30 at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla. Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., on June 12, 1913, son of Frederick and Ethel Shaunessey Wright, he had resided in Old Forge, N.Y., before moving to Great Barrington in 1957. He attended school in Mount Vernon and Old Forge. While attending school, he was a star basketball player and an amateur golf champion. He won many titles and tournaments throughout the area near New York City. While playing golf, he established and maintained a friendship with baseball legend Babe Ruth. Mr. Wright was employed as a restaurateur, justice of the peace and supermarket manager, all in Old Forge. He also was the state forest services officer for Berkshire County, leaving in 1963, and parks and recreation director for the city of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the 1970s. His first wife, the former Constance Mary King, died in 1979. He leaves his wife, the former Kate Farmer; two daughters, Joan Carol Sweet of Great Barrington and Kay Lynn Marino of Fort Lauderdale; a son, Charles King Wright of Dalton; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, William F. Wright.
