Catherine Gravel

Catherine B. Gravel, 90, of Bedford, N.H., formerly of 65 Center St., died Monday at Mount Carmel Health Care Center. Born in Adams on Feb. 6, 1912, daughter of John L. and Mary E. Ward Gannon, she graduated from the former Adams High School in 1930. She also graduated from Elms College in 1934. A teacher, she was first appointed to the Latin and English departments at the former Adams High School. She also taught English, Latin, world history and ancient history at the former C.T. Plunkett Junior High School, now the elementary school, in Adams and Drury High School in North Adams. She retired in 1975. Mrs. Gravel was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas, where she was a lector and Eucharistic minister and a member of its Rosary Sodality. She taught the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for many years and received the CCD Medal in 1984. A member of the Court Sancta Regina of the Catholic Daughters, she served as a regent for three terms. She also served as district deputy to the courts in Pittsfield, North Adams and Lenox. Her husband, Gerald F. Gravel, whom she married Aug. 7, 1943, died March 6, 1963. She leaves a son, Dr. Ward Gravel of Bedford, N.H.; a sister, Gertrude Pigeon of Quincy, and two granddaughters. The funeral will take place Saturday, June 8, at 10 a.m. from TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas Aquinas. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Saturday from 9:30 until the time of the funeral.
