Ralph Tirrell Sr.

Ralph E. Tirrell Sr., 88, of 21 Harold Ave., Westfield, formerly of Windsor, died yesterday at home. He was the brother of Donald Tirrell of East Windsor. Born in Cummington on Jan. 12, 1914, son of Clinton R. and Florence DeVerger Tirrell, he grew up in East Windsor and was a 1932 graduate of the former Dalton High School. He moved to Westfield in 1941. Mr. Tirrell was employed for 33 years with Fisk Tire in Chicopee, now UniRoyal, retiring from its receiving department in 1980. Prior to that, he was a foreman in the Civil Conservation Corps. He was a member of the Westfield Loyal Order of Moose and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1518 of Westfield. He enjoyed hunting and gardening and, during his retirement, raised and transplanted shrubs and trees for timber and wildlife. Besides his brother, he leaves his wife of 62 years, the former Margaret E. Rooney; six sons, David C. Tirrell, Robert E. Tirrell Sr., Ralph E. Tirrell Jr., Richard F. Tirrell and Gary W. Tirrell, all of Westfield, and Dr. Stephen M. Tirrell of Wellesley; two daughters, Kathleen M. Blair and Cynthia J. Fanion, both of Westfield; 14 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 from FIRTION-ADAMS FUNERAL HOME, 76 Broad St., Westfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church at 10. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 3 to 7. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Holyoke Soldiers' Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040, or to the Ralph E. Tirrell Sr. Youth Baseball Scholarship, in care of Woronoco Savings Bank, 31 Court St., Westfield, MA 01085.
