Martha Fortier

Martha Fortier, 89, of 33 Pleasant St. died Saturday evening at North Adams Commons Health Care Center. Born in Adams on Dec. 27, 1912, daughter of John and Julia Plue Scott, she attended Adams schools. Mrs. Fortier was employed by the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Co. for 10 years and by the former Fortier's Dairy for many years, retiring in 1969 when it closed. In 1924, at the age of 12, she received a medal from the Massachusetts Humane Society for bravery in saving a young girl from drowning at the New England Lime Co. quarry. Her husband, Raymond L. Fortier, whom she married Nov. 27, 1939, died Aug. 5, 1974. She leaves two sons, David Fortier and Daniel Fortier, both of Adams; a daughter, Lynn Swistak of Adams; four grandchildren, and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Mary Fortier, and also two brothers, Andrew Scott and Jack Scott, and three sisters, Margaret Scott, Mary Scott and Emma Kurpiel. A graveside service will be conducted tomorrow, July 3, at 10:15 at Bellevue Cemetery in Adams by the Rev. Donald Gray, pastor of First Baptist Church in Adams. Calling hours at TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, will be tomorrow, Wednesday, from 9 until the time of the service.
