William O'Brien Jr.

William H. O'Brien Jr., 84, of 375 Marble St. died Saturday at Holyoke Soldiers' Home, where he had lived for two years. He had served on the Board of Selectmen, the Housing Authority and the Board of Appeals, and was chairman of the Town Appeals Committee. Born Feb. 1, 1918, in Lee, son of William H. O'Brien Sr. and Maryann Hugo O'Brien, he graduated from Lee High School in 1936. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a chief machinist mate with the Seabees and served in the Philippines. Mr. O'Brien owned and operated O'Brien Insurance and Real Estate Agency. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a past president and lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club. He also was active in the Lee Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, the former Louisa B. Herrin, were married Feb. 1, 1944. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Carolyn "Candy" Eaton of Little Deer Isle, Maine, and three grandchildren. Another daughter, Mary Ann Horsington, died in 1995. His sisters, Margaret McDarby, Catherine Fenwick and Judith Kane, all predeceased him. A committal service will be held tomorrow at 11 at Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. AGAWAM CURRAN-JONES FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. Mr. O'Brien was civic-minded and loved the town of Lee.
