Nellie M. Karrey

Nellie Mary Karrey, 92, of 18 Marion Ave. died Saturday at home. Born in Adams on Jan. 22, 1910, daughter of James F. and Irene Therieu Karrey, she was a 1928 graduate of Drury High School, where she played the clarinet in the band. She also graduated in 1935 from the former North Adams Normal School, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Miss Karrey was a kindergarten teacher in the North Adams Public School System for 50 years. At the time of her retirement in 1988, the kindergarten classroom at Greylock School was named in her honor. She also was honored with the Key to the City by Mayor John Barrett III, and MCLA awarded her an honorary doctor of philosophy degree. Miss Karrey was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of its Rosary Society. She enjoyed knitting, traveling and listening to classical music. She leaves several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters and brothers, including Katherine, Margaret and Frances Karrey, Ella Mae Fournier, and John, James, Thomas and Bernard Karrey. Services will be Wednesday, July 10, at 10 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, July 9, from 4 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for the VNA & Hospice or the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness through the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
