W. Garfield Canon

W. Garfield Canon, 85, of Lee and Naples, Fla., died Tuesday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox. Born in Tyringham on May 4, 1917, son of Clifford R. and Abigail D. Garfield Canon, he was educated in the Tyringham Schoolhouse and was a graduate of Lee High School. He also graduated from Bliss Electric School in Washington, D.C., in 1937. He was first employed by the former Smith Paper Co. in Lee. He owned and operated Canon Electric Co. from 1952 until retiring in 1974. In the 1970s, he purchased the home and property of the late Dr. George S. Wickham on Main Street and developed the Garfield Townhouse apartments. Mr. Canon was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a former member of the Lee Fire Department and the Kiwanis Club. His wife, the former Virginia "Dolly" Mougin, died Jan. 17, 1983. The couple were married 44 years. He leaves two sons, Jeffrey G. Canon of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Mark E. Canon of Alpharetta, Ga.; a daughter, Christine Craighead of Ferrisburgh, Vt.; 14 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to the Lee Fire Department or to the Tyringham Union Church in care of KELLY FUNERAL HOME.
