Clarence Bugbee

Clarence E. "Sport" Bugbee Jr., 83, of 719 Main Road died Saturday evening at Berkshire Medical Center. He was town building inspector and, from 1972 to 1998, the Board of Health agent. Born in Adams on Nov. 20, 1918, son of Clarence E. Bugbee Sr. and Elva Bradway Bugbee, he attended schools there. He moved to Savoy in 1972. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater, working with the Mule Packs to build the Burma Road. He also was involved in the invasion of Okinawa. Mr. Bugbee was employed by the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Co. in Adams for several years and the former Mount Hope Farm in Williamstown for 10 years. He also worked for the former Plunkett Hospital as a stationary engineer for 15 years and as a private contractor for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and, for more than 50 years, of Berkshire Lodge of Masons AF & AM, both in Adams. A Shriner for more than 40 years, he was a member of the Melha Shrine in Springfield and the Berkshire Shrine Club in Pittsfield. He was a former member of the Adams Alert Hose Company for more than 20 years, where he was a fireman and an engineer, and the Cheshire and Savoy volunteer fire departments, the Adams Lions Club and Adams Post 160 of the American Legion. He leaves two brothers, Merritt Bugbee of the state of Florida and Roy Bugbee of Savoy. Mr. Bugbee was predeceased by a sister, Esmerelda Schoenfelder. Services will be at First Baptist Church in Adams at a date to be announced. There will be calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children through TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, which is in charge of arrangements.
