Mildred Wheeler

Mildred Ferguson Wheeler, 92, formerly of Colonial Gardens, died yesterday at Providence Care Center in Lenox. Born in Adams on July 6, 1910, daughter of T. Craig and Frances P. Jones Ferguson, she attended schools in Adams and graduated from Adams Memorial High School in 1927. She also graduated from the former North Adams Normal School, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Mrs. Wheeler taught school for 25 years, beginning at a rural school in Sheffield for one year. She then taught in Lexington and later at Bennington (Vt.) Elementary School for many years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Bennington County Retired Teachers Association and the Vermont and National education associations. She was also a member of the Mount Anthony Country Club since 1949, and a member of the Friends of the Library and the Adams Historical Society. Her husband, Robert E. Wheeler, whom she married Feb. 25, 1939, died May 6, 1994. Her closest survivors are a niece, Marcia Viale Bolster of Naples, Fla., and a nephew, M. Craig Viale of Pittsfield, and great nieces and great nephews. A memorial funeral mass celebrating the life of Mildred Wheeler will be held from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at a time to be announced. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in the family lot in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield, at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire, contributions in memory of Mrs. Wheeler may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or Hospice Care in the Berkshires through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
