Frederick Wood Skelton

Frederick Wood Skelton, 81, formerly of 325 Foley Road, died Sunday at Laurel Lake Center in Lee, where he had resided since 1999. Born in Flushing, N.Y., on Feb. 28, 1921, son of Frederick and Louise Marsden Skelton, he graduated from Berkshire School. He studied at Columbia University before 1942. He attended Harvard School of Design and the Bangor Theological Seminary. He became a part-time resident of Sheffield in 1972 and a full-time one after his retirement. He entered the Merchant Marine Academy in 1942. During World War II, he was appointed to the Navy Reserve and served aboard the USS Almaack. Under emergency orders, he assumed command of the USS LST-29 from the Philippines to San Francisco. He received several campaign medals. Mr. Skelton retired from the Sayville (N.Y.) Courthouse. He was a member of First Congregational Church of Stockbridge and enjoyed sailing and hiking the trails of Mount Everett. He read history and theology, and traveled extensively, including to Russia and China. He leaves a sister, Carol Logan of Candlewood Isle, New Fairfield, Conn. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Frederick Wood Skelton, formerly of 325 Foley Road in Sheffield, died Sept. 8, 2002. He also leaves a nephew, Mark Skelton Logan; a niece, Jeanette Louise Brown, and several greatnieces and -nephews. A service of remembrance will be conducted Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 at First Congregational Church in Stockbridge by the Rev. Steven Bridges, pastor.
