Thomas Edward O'Shaughnessy

Thomas Edward O'Shaughnessy, 60, of Lake Mansfield Road and 4 Crary Drive, Canton, N.Y., died Tuesday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after a four-month illness. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 22, 1942, son of John Quinn and Lucy Marie O'Sullivan O'Shaughnessy, he was educated in Long Island schools and was a 1959 graduate of Chaminade High School in Mineola, N.Y. He received an associate's degree from Nassau College in 1963 and a bachelor of science degree in education from Oneonta State University in 1965. He also received a master's degree in counseling in 1970 and later a doctor of philosophy degree in educational psychology, both from Indiana University. He was a professor at the State University of New York at Potsdam since 1980. He taught courses in education and special education. He had served with the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone from 1965 to 1966. He enjoyed basketball, NCAA wrestling, hiking, blue water sailing and photography. He had also sung with the St. Lawrence University chorus since 1989. He leaves his wife of 34 years, the former Laura Nuzzi, whom he married June 8, 1968, in Floral Park, N.Y.; two daughters, Nancy O'Shaughnessy Smith of New Marlboro and Ellen Clelia O'Shaughnessy of Somerville; a brother, Kevin O'Shaughnessy of Windham, Vt.; two sisters, Kathleen O'Shaughnessy Hearn of Lee and Sister Alice O'Shaughnessy, MD, OSJ, of Seaford, N.Y., and a granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Dr. Thomas Edward O'Shaughnessy died Sept. 10, 2002. Beloved husband of Laura; devoted father of Nancy and Ellen; grandfather to Charlotte Vincenza Smith; brother of Kevin, Kathleen and Sister Alice; brother-in-law of Rex Hearn, Peter and David Nuzzi; and father-in-law of David Smith. The funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 14, at noon at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, conducted by Sister Lauren Hanley, OSJ, in Brentwood, N.Y. Burial will follow in Our Lady of the Valley Cemetery in Sheffield. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
