James A. Tobin

James A. Tobin, 95, of 270 Allengate Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 15, 1907, son of William H. and Eleanor Cahill Tobin, he was a 1926 graduate of St. Joseph's High School. Mr. Tobin was employed by GE for 27 years, first in the power transformer department and later as a buyer of raw materials in the ordnance department. He retired in May 1969. Prior to that, he was employed by the former A&P Market on Elm Street and the former South Street Chevrolet. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs. His first wife, the former Rose Fallon, died in 1958. He leaves his wife, the former Mary Hourihan, whom he married Feb. 27, 1960; a son, Brother Sebastian (David) Tobin, Franciscan Order of Friars Minor, of New York City, and a sister, Sister Mary Bernardina (Rita) Tobin of Sisters of Providence in Holyoke. FUNERAL NOTICE -- James A. Tobin, 95, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday at 8:15 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at St. Joseph's Church by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 3 to 6. If friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the St. Joseph's Church improvement fund in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
