Matilda "Tillie" Hitchcock

Matilda "Tillie" Hitchcock, 79, of County Road died Saturday at Fairview Commons in Great Barrington. Born in Stamford, Conn., on June 2, 1923, daughter of Joseph and Virginia Juann Trierweiler, she attended the one-room schoolhouse on Brush Hill and Sheffield Center School. When she was 7, her family bought a farm on County Road, which has remained in the family and where a fourth generation is being raised. Mrs. Hitchcock was a homemaker. She was a longtime member of American Legion Auxiliary 340 in Sheffield and a sergeant at arms. She enjoyed playing bingo and traveling on senior tours. Her husband, Wallace C. Hitchcock Sr., whom she married Oct. 12, 1940, in Pownal, Vt., died Oct. 15, 1994. They spent many winters in Venice, Fla. She leaves two sons, Wallace C. Hitchcock Jr. and Mathias "Matt" Hitchcock, both of Sheffield; four daughters, Nancy Porter of Venice, Fla., Jeanne Rini of Chicago, and Anita Macchi and Michele Brooks, both of Sheffield; a brother, John E. Trierweiler of Sheffield; a sister, Margaret Eichstedt of Canaan, Conn.; 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Matilda "Tillie" Hitchcock died Nov. 2, 2002. She was predeceased by a sister, Constance Kotos, and two brothers, Yves and Nicholas Trierweiler. A Mass Celebrating the Life of Matilda Hitchcock will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield by the Rev. John Lis. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends tomorrow, Nov. 5, from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Auxiliary 340 through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
