Sammy Kennedy

Sammy Kennedy, 74, of 166 Chapel St. died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Camden, Ala., on April 15, 1926, son of Sam and Ruth Cannon Kennedy, he attended Alabama schools and had resided in Pittsfield for the past 54 years. Mr. Kennedy was employed as a meter reader for Berkshire Gas Co. for 25 years, retiring Oct. 1, 1994. He had also worked at the former Besse-Clarke department store for several years. He was a member of Second Congregational Church, where he was an ordained deacon and a church moderator. He was also a member of the board of trustees of the church, the church choir and the men's fellowship club. He was also a member of the Berkshire Association of United Congregational Churches and the Church and Ministry Committee, and a delegate of the Massachusetts Conference to United Congregational Churches. Mr. Kennedy was a member of the Prince Hall Masons, the Berkshire Gas Union Retired Employees Association, and he was involved in both Bible study groups at his church. He was an usher at Tanglewood for several years, was active in the city Democratic Party and wasa member of Ken's Bowling Association. He was a former Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader, a volunteer at the Christian Center and a coach for the YMCA church basketball league. He leaves his wife, the former Emma Manzie, whom he married Jan. 27, 1947; five sons, Samuel T. Kennedy of Boston, Richard D. Kennedy of Middlefield, Conn., Reginald G. Kennedy of Dover, Del., Marvin E. Kennedy of Springfield and Mark C. Kennedy of West Springfield; two brothers, James R. Kennedy of Lansing, Mich., and David C. Kennedy of Battle Creek, Mich.; five sisters, Ruth MacIntosh of Mobile, Ala., Sally Williams, Adele Hicks and Magdeline Patton, all of Tuskegee, Ala., and Katie Adams-Goines of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Second Congregational Church in Pittsfield, with the Rev. John G. Wightman, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mr. Kennedy was the loving father of "The Kennedy Boys." Donations may be made to the Second Congregational Church for the formation of the Sammy Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
