Esther R. Lewis

Esther R. Lewis, 88, of 4 First Ave. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in North Adams on Aug. 2, 1914, daughter of Charles and Anna Dalton Rhinehart, she attended Pittsfield schools and was a 1930 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She graduated from the former Berkshire Business College in 1932. She was employed as a payroll clerk by the GE power transformer department for 25 years, retiring in 1976. Mrs. Lewis was a communicant of the North American Martyrs Church, a Eucharistic minister and a member of its Rosary Sodality. She enjoyed reading, gardening, going out to dinner and friends visiting. Her husband, Daniel E. Lewis, whom she married Oct. 15, 1932, died March 11, 2001. She leaves two daughters, Mary Connor of Berkshire and Kathleen Hook of Pittsfield; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by another daughter, Carolyn Atwell, on Aug. 1, 1997. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Esther R. Lewis, age 88, died Nov. 5, 2002. She was predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn Atwell, on Aug. 1, 1997, and her sister, Mary Gallagher, on Dec. 22, 2000. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be Friday at 9 from the funeral home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at North American Martyrs Church with the Rev. David Raymond, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
