Harold J. North Sr.

Harold J. North Sr., 78, pastor of Clayton Church of God, of 2346 Canaan-Southfield Road, Southfield, died Wednesday at home. Born in Charlotte Center, N.Y., on Jan. 18, 1924, son of Clarence and Nina Chase North, he attended schools in Falconer, N.Y., and graduated from Jamestown (N.Y.) Bible Institute. He moved to Southfield in 1978. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. North had been a pastor for 36 years, the last 24 at Clayton Church of God. A leader in the Church of God, he was a past officer of its ministerial council for 30 years, retiring in 2001, and had done missionary work in Kingston, Jamaica, in the early 1970s. He drove a school bus in North Canaan, Conn., and had formerly driven buses in Jamestown and trucks around New England. He also was an ambulance driver for the Canaan (Conn.) Volunteer Ambulance Squad. He was a member of the Canaan Lions and James A. Modolo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8348 in Great Barrington, and a life member of American Legion Post 350 in New Marlboro and Disabled American Veterans. As young man, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He and is wife, the former Hilma M. Lindstrom, were married June 27, 1942, in Falconer. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Harold J. North Jr. of Jamestown and Richard North of Brightwood, Va.; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Harold J. North Sr., who died Nov. 27, 2002, will be held at a later date. There will be no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Clayton Church of God in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, which is in charge of arrangements.
