Edward Schmidt

Edward August Schmidt, 63, of 105 North Summer St. died Tuesday evening at home. Born in Adams on March 14, 1937, son of the late August and Elsa Pause Schmidt, he attended Adams schools and graduated from the former Adams High School in 1956. He also graduated from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in 1958. He served in the Naval Reserve from 1960 until 1963. Mr. Schmidt was employed as an appliance repair technician for Sears Roebuck Co. in Pittsfield from 1965 until retiring March 31, 1999. He had been previously employed by Carpenter Florist in Cohoes, N.Y., and for Viale Floral Co. in Pittsfield. He was a longtime Adams firefighter and was elected to the Alert Hose Company on Nov. 2, 1976. He served as second assistant foreman from 1988 to 1990; as first assistant foreman from 1990 to 1992, and was elected foreman in 1992, serving until 1994. He retired from the company in 1997, when he was elected as an honorary member. Mr. Schmidt was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and the Adams Lodge 1335, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was a former town constable and town meeting member in Adams. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and going to antiques auctions. He also enjoyed restoring his antique 1935 Dodge automobile. He leaves his wife of 42 years, the former Esther H. Cyrulik, whom he married Oct. 11, 1958; two daughters, Deborah Caron of Adams and Erynn Jacobsen of Warrington, Pa.; a sister, Dawn Williams of Lenox, and two granddaughters. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Requiem Eucharist at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Adams, celebrated by the Rev. Jane R. Dunning, interim rector. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Alert Hose Company, St. Mark's Episcopal Church or to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Northern Berkshire through the funeral home. He leaves two granddaughters, Mallorey Caron and Madelyn Caron, both of Adams.
