Joan M. Markland

Joan M. Markland, 70, of 3 Overlook Terrace, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 14, at Baystate Medical Hospital in Springfield after a brief illness. Born in Adams on Jan. 28, 1933, daughter of Herbert P. and Doris Pitman Guettler, she was a 1951 graduate of the former Adams High School. Mrs. Markland was employed as a medical transcriptionist by the Adams Internists and North Adams Regional Hospital, from which she retired in 1992 after 25 years of service. Prior to that, she was employed by the former W.B. Plunkett Hospital. A communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas', she enjoyed bicycling the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, fishing and gardening. She and her husband, James E. Markland Sr., would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 20. They were married in St. Francis' Church in North Adams. Besides her husband, she leaves four sons, Thomas J. Markland and Brent A. Markland, both of Adams, Joel E. Markland of Savoy, James E. Markland Jr. of Seabrook, N.H.; a sister, Virginia Wilson of Celina, Ohio, and 10 grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 in St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours at McBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Liberty St., will be Monday from 4 to 7.
