Agnes Dunn Murphy

Agnes Dunn Murphy, 94, of 35 East St. died at home on Friday, Feb. 14. Born Jan. 25, 1909, at the Dunn family home at 35 East St. in Great Barrington, daughter of John T. and Margaret Kane Dunn, she was a graduate of the former Searles High School in 1927. She graduated from the former Westfield State Normal School in 1929, and graduated from Brooklyn (N.Y.) College in 1954. She taught school in Mill River, various New York City schools, and most recently at the Astor Home in Rhinebeck, N.Y., until her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church and a member of the Thursday Morning Club. Her husband, James A. Murphy, whom she married in 1935, died in 1999 at the age of 97. She leaves a son, the former mayor of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., James A. Murphy Jr. of Lake Desolation, Middle Grove, N.Y.; a daughter, Jean A. McLeod of Vancouver, B.C.; two brothers, John "Jack" Dunn and Robert Dunn, both of Great Barrington; two sisters, Cecelia Sitnik and Margaret Sermini, both of Great Barrington; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Survivors also include six grandchildren, Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III of Saratoga Springs, Colleen M. Columbo of Greenwich, Conn., Constance M. Maddry of Great Falls, Va., Neil R. McLeod of Santa Fe, N.M., Kim L. McLeod of Albuquerque, N.M., and Adrienne M. McLeod of Tucson, Ariz. Funeral Services for Agnes Murphy, who died Feb. 14, 2003, will be Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 9 from the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, to be followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Peter's Church at 10 with the Rev. Dan Papineau, MIC, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be sent to the Murphy Family Scholarship Fund, which is a fund to help needy students attend Williams College, at Williams College, Williamstown, MA 01267, or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
