Howard F. Haywood

Howard F. Haywood, 87, formerly of Heaton Court, died Monday evening at Kimball Farms Nursing Home in Lenox, where he had resided since December 2000. Born in Housatonic on Feb. 11, 1916, son of Henry and Katharine Lape Haywood, he attended local schools and graduated from the former Searles High School in 1934. He moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1951. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he enlisted on Sept. 24, 1942, and served with the 8th Air Force as a radio operator/gunner with the rank of sergeant. He flew on 30 consecutive missions in a B-24 bomber over Europe, including on D-Day. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with three Oak Clusters. He was honorably discharged Nov. 14, 1945. Mr. Haywood was employed as an electrician with Transwestern Airlines in Kansas City beginning in 1951. Prior to that, he had been employed as a material designer at the former Monument Mills in Housatonic. His wife, the former Helen L. Williams, whom he married Dec. 11, 1945 in Kansas City, died Nov. 2, 1998. He leaves a brother, Richard Haywood of Sheffield. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Burial for Mr. Howard Haywood will be conducted in the spring in Missouri. There will be no local services. He also leaves one nephew and eight nieces. He was predeceased by his brothers, William, Stanley, Orin and George, and his two sisters, Mildred Murphy and Evelyn Trepania.
