Born in Adams on Oct. 29, 1919, son of Orlando and Florida Lemieux Briggs, he moved to North Adams as a child with his family and attended local schools. He moved to Williamstown in 1958 and, in 1978, to Pownal, Vt., where he owned a 100-acre farm. He returned to North Adams in 1996. A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 1261st Medical Detachment. A television and radio repairman, Mr. Briggs managed his family's TV repair shop on Eagle Street for many years, and operated his own shop several years ago on Taft Street. He also worked for several years at Central Radio and Appliance and was involved in other area businesses. He operated a former roller skating rink in Adams, and years ago co-owned a gas and service station on State Road. He was a ham radio operator and, in his younger years, owned and piloted a Taylorcraft plane. His great-grandfather, George Nixon Briggs, was governor from 1844 to 1851. He leaves his wife, the former Constance Washburn Ashley, whom he married July 24, 1941, and a son, Edward R. "Ted" Briggs of North Adams. A daughter, Harriett A. Briggs, died Sept. 12, 1998. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private service and burial will be conducted in the spring in the family lot in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. There will be no calling hours. The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests donations in his memory be made to the Berkshire Humane Society through AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Francis Briggs, Herman Briggs and George Briggs, and a sister, Dorothy Richards, are deceased.
