William Jay Johnson Jr

William Jay Johnson Jr., 79, of 363 Walker St. died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he had been admitted Feb. 27. Born in North Adams on July 13, 1923, son of William J. and Pearl Nichols Johnson, he was a 1942 graduate of Drury High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as an engineer and pilot. He was also an active reservist with the Army Air Force and a veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a major after 21 years of total service. He was employed as a service technician with Xerox Corp. for 17 years, retiring in 1969. His wife, the former Eleanor Mae Martin, whom he married in July 1962, died Oct. 30, 2000. He leaves a stepson, Daniel M. Peirce of Drury; a sister, Shirley D. Cloud of Redmond, Ore., and two stepgrandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for William J. Johnson Jr. will be Saturday, March 8, at 10 at the AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, North Adams, with the Rev. Jill D. Graham, pastor of the First Congregational Church, North Adams, officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 6 at the funeral home.
