Sister Gertrude Kiely

Sister Gertrude Kiely, 90, formerly Sister John Francis, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield for 70 years, died yesterday at Holyoke Hospital. Born in North Adams, daughter of Patrick H. and Mary T. Flaherty Kiely, she was a 1933 graduate of the former St. Joseph’s High School. She became a resident of the Mont Marie Infirmary in Holyoke in 1987 and of its Health Care Center in 1993. She earned bachelor of arts and master’s degrees from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee. She taught at St. Mark’s and at the former St. Mary’s schools in Pittsfield and served as librarian and secretary at St. Agnes’ School in Dalton. She also taught at St. Michael’s Cathedral, Holy Name and Cathedral High, all in Springfield. She leaves three nieces, Mary Cote of North Adams, Patricia Gancarz of Adams and Nancy Lee Kerr of Charlotte, N.C., and a nephew, William Kiely of Adams. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The wake for Sister Gertrude Kiely will be Wednesday, March 19, from 2 to 4:30 at Mont Marie, with a Prayer Service at 3. Her Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 5 in Mont Marie Chapel. Burial will follow in Mont Marie Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Ste. 1, Holyoke, MA 01040-2739. Arrangements entrusted to the SAMPSON FAMILY CHAPELS. She was predeceased by a brother, the Rev. William Kiely, and two aunts, Sister John Francis Flaherty, SSJ, and Sister Cecilia Regina Flaherty, SSJ.
