Barbara Ann Cashin

Barbara Ann Cashin, 81, of 53 Cherry St. died Tuesday, March 18, at Sweet Brook Care Center in Williamstown. Born in North Adams on May 10, 1921, daughter of James E. Wall, founder of the former Wall-Streeter Shoe Co., and Martha L. Congdon Wall, she attended the former St. Joseph’s schools. She was a 1940 graduate of Stoneleigh-Prospect Hill in Greenfield. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in English from Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., in 1943 and her master’s degree in English from Columbia University in New York City in 1944. Mrs. Cashin was head of the English departments at Pine Cobble School in Williamstown and the former Adams Memorial High School. She learned Braille in order to teach several visually impaired students in the community. She was a communicant of St. Francis’ and St. Anthony’ churches. She served on the board of trustees at Marymount College and boards of directors of Recording for the Blind in Williamstown and the American Red Cross in Pittsfield. She was a longtime member of the Women’s Auxiliary at North Adams Regional Hospital, the North Adams Travel Club, the North Adams Country Club and Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown. Her husband, Dr. John C. Cashin, whom she married Oct. 16, 1954, in St. Francis’ Church, died Nov. 5, 2000. She leaves her sister-in-law, Virginia Daniels Wall of Williamstown, and nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Barbara Ann Wall Cashin will be celebrated Saturday at 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams, by the Rev. Daniel J. O’Hear, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for Recording for the Blind or the charity of the donor’s choice through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Virginia Daniels Wall of Williamstown; six nieces, Barbara Nissen Wagner of North Adams, Jane Nissen McKenzie of Latrobe, Pa., Marjorie Wall Wood of Latham, N.Y., Nancy Wall Thorne of Fairfield, Conn., Patricia Wall Wynkoop of Annapolis, Md., and Jinx Wall Van Steemburg of Loudonville, N.Y.; four nephews, Bruce Cashin of Irvine, Calif., Timothy Cashin of Santa Monica, Calif., Scott Cashin of Littleton, Colo., and Thomas Cashin of Pocatello, Idaho; several grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Constance Wall Nissen, who died April 10, 1995, and two brothers, Robert E. Wall who died Oct. 12, 1992, and James E. Wall Jr.,who died in infancy.
