Richard F. “Dick” Shumar

Richard F. “Dick” Shumar, 92, died at his home on Taconic Avenue on Wednesday. Born in Imlay City, Mich., Feb. 15, 1911, son of Elmer and Ida Finley Shumar, he graduated from the engineering school of the University of Michigan in 1932. He worked as an electrical engineer for Dow Chemical in Midland, Mich., until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Midland Elks and the Midland Country Club. In 1994, Mr. Shumar and his wife moved to Great Barrington, where he was a member of the Old Parish Church in Sheffield. He enjoyed playing cribbage, listening to Big Band-era music, reading P.G. Wodehouse, studying Civil War history, eating breakfast at the Sun Rise Diner in Sheffield, and in his earlier years also enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing and boating. His wife, the former Kitty Hughes, whom he married Sept. 11, 1939, died in 2002. He leaves a daughter, Deborah Harris of Great Barrington; a son, Peter Shumar of Traverse City, Mich.; and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside service for Richard Shumar will be held in May in Michigan. He also leaves four grandchildren, Charles and Elizabeth Harris and Peter and Molly Shumar.
