Madelyn V. Cross

Madelyn V. Cross, 87, of 269 Mohawk Forest Blvd. died Tuesday at North Adams Regional Hospital after being admitted March 28. Born in Haverhill on Feb. 24, 1916, daughter of Henry T. and J. Madelyn Tulip Duval, she graduated with honors from the former Williamstown High School in 1933. She also graduated from the former Bliss Business College. She was last employed as a credit manager with the Lerner Shops in Peabody, retiring in 1978. While in Pittsfield, she worked at GE as a secretary and Sears Roebuck in North Adams as the credit manager. She was an active member of the Women’s Club and appeared in several of its stage plays. She was an accomplished pianist and an avid skier. She taught square dancing in Beverly for the Young Teens organization. She leaves a son, James R. Cross of North Adams; three daughters, Gail Weyant of Roslindale, Barbara Vareschi of Chestnut Hill and Carol Paris of Goffstown, N.H.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves her former husband, Frederick J. Cross of Groveland. FUNERAL NOTICE -- In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be scattered, following cremation, upon Mount Greylock. Formal funeral services are omitted and the family suggests memorial donations to the Eileen Barrett Cancer Support Group through the North Adams Regional Hospital, Hospital Avenue, North Adams, MA 01247. The MCBRIDE FUNERAL SERVICE of Adams is in charge of arrangements.
