Eleanora Matilda Zauls

Eleanora Matilda Zauls, 94, formerly of North Adams, died Friday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where she was admitted earlier in the day. Born in Valmiera, Latvia, on Jan. 21, 1909, daughter of Janis and Marija Vilde, she was educated there. She emigrated to the United States in 1950 and settled in North Adams in 1951. She had resided at 1551 Massachusetts Ave. and 283 Mohawk Forest Blvd., and moved to Cape Cod last year. Mrs. Zauls was employed with the former Sprague Electric Co. on Marshall Street until her retirement in 1974. Prior to that, she worked at the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates in Adams. She was a member of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church of Boston. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and cooking Latvian dishes, and was skilled in knitting and in doing fine needlework of Latvian designs. Her husband, Percy William Zauls, whom she married Nov. 1, 1936, died on Feb. 15, 1987. She leaves two sons, Juris Zauls of Brewster and Andris Zauls of Watertown; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two stepgrandchildren in Latvia. A stepdaughter, Renata Rozitis, predeceased her. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Eleanora Zauls will be Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will take place at a later date in Catskill (N.Y.) Latvian Memorial Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 4 to 6 and Monday from 6 until the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for a charity of the donor’s choice through the funeral home. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed entertaining with wonderful Latvian cooking. She also enjoyed gardening and crafts, including knitting and fine needlework in Latvian designs. Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Mary Brenda Zauls of Brewster and Helen Zauls of Watertown; her grandchildren, Juris V. Zauls of Stamford, Conn., Kristine Vail of Waltham, and A. Jason Zauls of Chicago, and great-grandchildren, Tristan Zauls, Gersemi Zauls, Ryan Vail and Sara Vail. She was predeceased by her stepdaughter, Renata Rozitis, and a brother, Janis Vilde.
