Howard Phillip Chilson

Howard Phillip Chilson, 77, of 470 Union St. died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in North Adams on March 28, 1926, son of Clarence and Lillian Chase Chilson, he attended local schools. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a head gunner’s mate and received several ribbons and medals. Mr. Chilson was employed in the maintenance department at the former Sprague Electric Co. for 47 years, retiring in 1985. He attended First Baptist Church and was a member of the Sprague Electric Quarter Century Club, where he served on its Fall Foliage Float Committee for many years. He was also a member of International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Technical and Machine Workers Local 200, AFL-CIO. An avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, he also enjoyed woodworking and camping. He leaves his wife, the former Ethel M. Collins, whom he married Jan. 11, 1947, in First Baptist Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Linda Susan Champagne of North Adams; a son, Kenneth Howard Chilson of North Adams; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services for Howard Phillip Chilson will take place Monday, April 14, at 1 at the family plot in Southview Cemetery, with the Rev. Joseph H. DeCosta, pastor of First Baptist Church of North Adams, officiating. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the North Adams Ambulance Service through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include four grandchildren, Lisa Briggs, Julie Errichetto, Mark Champagne and Kurt Chilson Singer, and six great-grandchildren. Three brothers predeceased him: Jack Chilson, Harold Chilson and Robert Chilson.
