Helen New

Helen New, 83, of Cherry Street died yesterday at home. Born in Stockbridge on March 17, 1920, daughter of Harry and Jeanne Zimmermann Cordes, she graduated as valedictorian from the former Williams High School in 1937. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of New Rochelle, N.Y., in 1941 and later attended the former Pittsfield Secretarial School. Mrs. New was employed as supervisor of purchasing at the Norman Rockwell Museum, retiring in 1992. She also had been a teacher at the former Searles High School in Great Barrington and an editor of the General Electric Company News in Pittsfield. In her youth, she had been a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church and an outstanding golfer. She was a member of the Laurel Hill Association, the Stockbridge Library and a life member of the Friends of the Norman Rockwell Museum. Several of her poems were published in The Berkshire Eagle in the 1930s. She enjoyed reading, music and gardening. She and her husband, Edward F. New Jr., would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary May 14. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Edward F. New III of Milford, Eugene M. New and William J. New, both of Pittsfield; two daughters, Patricia A. New of Springfield and Christine M. Castellon of Neshanic Station, N.J., and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Helen Cordes New of Stockbridge will be celebrated Tuesday, April 15, at 10 at Corpus Christi Church in Housatonic by the Rev. Anthony Jutt. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Stockbridge. The family will receive friends Monday, April 14, from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. She leaves her six grandchildren, Richard, Kari, Nicole, Samantha, William Jr. and Robert New. She was predeceased by two brothers, Chester and Henry Cordes.
