Robert E. Brownsword Sr., 89
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Robert E. Brownsword Sr., doctor of optometry, 89, of 62 East St. died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted April 9.
Born in North Adams on Dec. 11, 1913, son of Walter A. and Ethel Nixon Brownsword, he was a graduate of Drury High School and a 1949 graduate of Massachusetts College of Optometry in Boston.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Brownsword began in practice with his father in 1949 and retired in 1999.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a longtime member and past master of Lafayette-Greylock Lodge of Masons AP & AM, a member and past exalted ruler of the North Adams Elks Lodge 487, a former member of the North Adams Lions Club and the National Rifle Association, and a member of the Knights Templar and Omega Upsilon Phi fraternity.
He leaves his wife, the former Marion E. Williams, whom he married April 9, 1938; a son, Robert E. Brownsword Jr. of Williamstown; a grandson, Capt. Robert E. Brownsword III, currently serving in Korea, and a great-grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The Episcopal Burial Office will be conducted Wednesday at 1 in St. John's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Edward A. King, rector. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 15, from 5 to 7 at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, North Adams.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to either the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at North Adams Regional Hospital or to the Activities Fund at Sweet Brook Care Center, Williamstown, through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
