Elma Rita “Babe” Nichols

Elma Rita “Babe” Nichols, 89, a native of Great Barrington, died yesterday at the German Center for Extended Care in West Roxbury, where she had resided since 2001. Born on July 2, 1913, daughter of Joseph and Louisa Caligari Cappi, in the home her father built on North Plain Road, she lived most of her life there. She was a 1930 graduate of the former Searles High School, where she was a member of the girls’ basketball team. She moved to Roslindale to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Albert E. Gillis, in the mid-1990s. Mrs. Nichols was employed as a quality control inspector at Becton Dickinson in Canaan, Conn., retiring in 1978. She was a former communicant of St. Peter’s Church and a member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. She enjoyed trips to Maine, Cape Cod and Foxwoods Resort Casino. Her husband, Leonard F. Nichols, died Sept. 1, 1950. Besides her daughter, she leaves another daughter, Nancy Nichols of Melrose, three grandchildren and a great-grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Elma Cappi Nichols, who died April 14, 2003, will be Wednesday, April 16, at 1 in St. Peter’s Church, with the Rev. Shaun O’Connor, MIC, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral on Wednesday from 11 to 12:30 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the German Center, Schraft Residents Fund, in care of the funeral home. She leaves her son-in-law, Michael O’Connor of Melrose, three grandchildren, Julie, Laurie and Sean Gillis, and a great-grandson, Derek Gillis. She was predeceased by her siblings, Ida, Louis, Joseph and Eleanor Cappi.
