Mary E. Sloan

Mary E. Sloan, 91, formerly of 75 Orchard St., died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Rockdale, N.Y., on Feb. 15, 1912, daughter of Charles and Lillian Carpenter, she was educated in New York schools. She attended Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H., then transferred to William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., where she obtained her bachelor of arts degree in 1933. She also obtained a bachelor of science degree in library science from New York University in 1936. She lived in Syracuse, N.Y., after her marriage and moved to Lee in 1950. Mrs. Sloan was hired in 1963 to organize the first functioning library at the then-new Lee High School and was librarian until retiring in 1978. During that time, she also served on the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges’ Evaluation Committee. She had previously been a librarian and English teacher in New York. She was a communicant of St. George’s Episcopal Church and was a member of its women’s group, Altar Guild and vestry. She also served as recording secretary for the executive board of the Western New England Episcopal Church Women. Her husband, Herbert W. Sloan, whom she married on July 29, 1939, died Feb. 21, 1989. She leaves a daughter, Sara F. Sloan of Palisades, N.Y., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A son, John H. Sloan, died in 1993. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Mary E. Sloan, who died April 14, 2003, will be held Thursday at 11 at St. George’s Church, with the Rev. Canon Noel A. Bailey, rector, officiating. There will be no visiting hours. KELLY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Sloan leaves her loving grandchildren, Susan and Cathy, and her two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Matthew.
