Forrest Earle “Newt” Newton

Forrest Earle “Newt” Newton, 68, of 901 South State Road died Saturday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. He was a former selectman and former member of the Fire Department. Born in Cabot, Vt., on Nov. 6, 1934, son of Helen Wheeler Newton Woodward of Cheshire and the late Lewis Newton, he attended the former Adams High School. He had resided in Cheshire for 62 years. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957. Mr. Newton was a longtime member and operating engineer with Local 98. He had been employed as a heavy-equipment operator for J.H. Maxymillian Inc., U.S. Gypsum in Adams and Whitney and Tucker farms in Cheshire. He had attended the Baptist church as a child and was in the process of becoming a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church. He enjoyed horse pulls at local fairs, fishing and bus trips. Besides his mother, he leaves his wife, the former Janet Belini, whom he married Aug. 7, 1954; a son, Forrest L. Newton of Berkshire village; a daughter, Christine Ann Newton of Jefferson; a brother, Wallace Newton of Jacksonville, Fla., and two granddaughters. Another daughter, Terry Lee Newton, died Nov. 5, 2001. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Forrest Earle Newton, who died Saturday, April 19, 2003, was also predeceased by a brother, Robert Newton. He also leaves his daughter-in-law, Sharon Newton, and his granddaughters, Megan and Mary. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, April 24, at 11 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire by the Rev. David A. Raymond, pastor. Burial will be in Cheshire Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church in care of DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, Cheshire.
