Louis John Davis

Louis John Davis, 84, of 95 Bracewell Ave. died Tuesday at Williamstown Commons following a long illness. Born in North Adams on Oct. 29, 1918, son of John D. and Rhoda Rizk Davis, he was a 1937 graduate of the former St. Joseph’s High School in North Adams. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a teletype operator and cryptographer with the 86th Station Complement Squadron. He served as a corporal in the battles of northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe, receiving several medals. He was last employed by GE as a foreman in the power transformer division, retiring in 1972 with more than 19 years of service. He had also operated a bakery with his brother, George, in Bethel, Conn., and had a partnership with his sister, Helen, in the operation of the former Helen’s Diner in North Adams until 1953. Earlier, he had worked for the former Gale Shoe Co. Mr. Davis was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church and a member and soloist in its senior choir for more than 25 years. He was also a member of the Lebanese-American Social Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He leaves his wife of 49 years, the former Shirley A. David, whom he married Sept. 5, 1953; three daughters, Judith Ann Davis of North Adams, Susan Mary Davis of Shrewsbury and Barbara L. Davis-Hassan of Lanesboro; two sons, Robert A. Davis of North Adams and James L. Davis of Elmira, N.Y.; a sister, Krimi Kahwaji of Bennington, Vt.; and seven grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Louis John Davis will take place Monday, April 28, at 10 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in the family plot at Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, April 27, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. A sister, Helen Garner, and a brother, George Davis, are deceased.
