Ellen Agnes Alongi

Ellen Agnes Alongi, 96, of 209 Ashland St. died Thursday afternoon at North Adams Commons. Born in North Pownal, Vt., on Sept. 21, 1906, daughter of E. Matthew Convery and Bertha Kelley Convery, she moved to North Adams at an early age. She attended schools in North Adams, including the former Brayton Grammar School, and graduated from Drury High School in 1926. Mrs. Alongi was a buyer at the former Boston Store, which later became the Forbes and Wallace Store, until her retirement in 1970. Prior to that, she worked in several North Adams restaurants, including the Richmond Hotel restaurant and the Richmond Grille. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church, and a former member of its Rosary Society. Her husband, Joseph Alongi, whom she married Sept. 22, 1932, died March 21, 1999. She was the last of her immediate family. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ellen Agnes Alongi will be Saturday at 9:30 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Funeral Mass will be at 10 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, with the Rev. Daniel J. Oâ€™Hear, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Anthony Centennial Fund in care of the funeral home. Survivors include nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Two sisters, Maude F. Convery and Josephine Convery, are deceased.
