Eleanor L. “Grammy” Pierce

Eleanor L. “Grammy” Pierce, 89, of 68 Elm Terrace, Greenfield, formerly of Windsor, died Friday at Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. Born in Troy, N.Y., on April 23, 1914, daughter of Herbert A. and Clara Galusha Burdick, she graduated from Commerce High School in Springfield in 1932. She resided in Windsor from 1920 until 1935 when she moved to Charlemont. She moved to Greenfield in 1954. Mrs. Pierce was employed by Alberties Restaurant for 24 years, and also by the Charlemont Inn, Bridge Lunch and Old Fort Restaurant. She retired in 1968. She attended Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Greenfield. During World War II, she was an aircraft spotter in Massachusetts for the War Department. She enjoyed writing music, poetry and letters, and country music and NASCAR racing. She was an expert on Burdick family history. Her husband, Lyle W. Pierce died in 1963. She leaves three sons, Norman A. Burdick of Williamstown, Donald E. Wilbur of Harrisburg, Pa., and Lyle W. Pierce Jr. of Leominster; three daughters, Clara B. Fielder of Orange, and Lorene L. Small and Carol A. Tidlund, both of Greenfield; three brothers, Ralph Burdick of Bernardston, Russell Burdick of Sallasaw, Okla., and Robert Burdick of Beverly Hills, Fla.; four sisters, Ruth Thatcher of Plainfield, Hazel Churchill of Shelburne Falls, Joyce Hyte of Holyoke and Barbara Sharpe of Santa Maria, Calif., 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild, and many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Eleanor L. “Grammy” Pierce, 89, died Friday, May 2, 2003. Calling hours at WALKER FUNERAL HOME, 14 High St., Greenfield, will be Thursday, May 8, from 10 until the time of the service at 11. Officiating will be the Rev. Charles Tyree, pastor of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Burial will follow in Leavitt Cemetery, Charlemont. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be directed to the Cancer Patient Fund, Oncology Unit, 154 High St., Greenfield, or Christian and Missionary Church, 393 Chapman St., Greenfield, MA 01301. She was predeceased by two granddaughters, Patricia A. Wilbur in 1997 and Katherine Gochinski in 1989.
