Neil Shepard Orenstein

Neil Shepard Orenstein, 60, of Beartown Mountain Road, died Monday at home. Born in New York City on April 5, 1943, son of Shirley Berkowitz Orenstein and the late Benjamin Orenstein, he graduated from Valley Stream South High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Clark University. He later earned his master’s degree from Queens College and his doctorate from Rutgers Institute of Microbiology. He moved from Boston to Monterey in 1985. Mr. Orenstein maintained a private practice in Lenox as a nutritional biochemist, helping people re-establish their biochemical balance through proper eating. He was a well-known speaker who lectured extensively, and also wrote and was a contributing editor on works in his field. He was a member of the Stockbridge Sportsman’s Club, the Berkshire Fishing Club and was an instrumental founding member of the Sportsmen for Land Preservation. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Berkshire Natural Resources Council. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sarah Lindsey Bingham of Great Barrington; a daughter, Elizabeth Bingham Orenstein, at home; a stepson, William Bingham Conklin, at home, and a brother, Edward Orenstein of Cambridge. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A service celebrating the life of Neil Shepard Orenstein will be conducted Sunday, May 11, at 2 at Hevreh of South Berkshire in Great Barrington, with Rabbi Deborah Zecher officiating. Besides his mother, Dr. Orenstein is survived by his wife, Sarah Lindsey Bingham of Great Barrington; his daughter, Elizabeth Bingham Orenstein, his stepson William Bingham Conklin, and his brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Rosanna Sattler of Cambridge.
