A. Jean Gurney Rice

A. Jean Gurney Rice, 90, of Village East Apartments, 546 Union St., died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in New Bedford on April 10, 1913, daughter of Preston S. Gurney and Sarah Kenyon Gurney, she moved to North Adams at a young age and attended North Adams schools, graduating from Drury High School in 1931. She then attended Swain School of Design in New Bedford. She was employed as a telephone operator for several years, but for most of her life was a homemaker. She attended the Stamford (Vt.) Community Church. She was a member of the Baldwinsville (N.Y.) Episcopal Church when she lived there, and a member of the North Adams Travel Club and North Adams Garden Club. She was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Her husband, Douglas T. Rice, whom she married Dec. 7, 1950, died April 1, 1989. She leaves one son, Robert Preston Rice of Stamford; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services to celebrate the life of A. Jean Gurney Rice will take place Thursday at 10 at the Stamford Community Church in Stamford, Vt., with the Rev. William Wilson, pastor, officiating. Private burial will take place in the Rice family plot in Hillside Cemetery, North Adams. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for the Stamford Community Church through the FLYNN & DAGNOLI HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247. Survivors also include five grandchildren, Allison Rougeau, Preston Rice, Jeff Connor, John Connor, Jennifer Connor; six great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Rowan, Spencer and Kierra Connor, Griffin and Morgan Rougeau. Mrs. Rice was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Gurney Coughlin.
