Eleanor Hughes Griffiths

Eleanor Hughes Griffiths, 83, of Hewins Street died Wednesday at Fairview Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Sheffield. Born in Sheffield on March 29, 1920, daughter of James and Caroline “Prim” King Hughes, she attended the Rannie (formerly known as East Road) and Center grammar schools and graduated from the former Sheffield High School in 1937, where she was president of her class, editor of The Pine Knoll Register school paper and a basketball player. She most recently worked for the Macy’s Garage parts department. Prior to that, she worked as a production planner at Keuffel & Esser in Salisbury, Conn., for 29 years. She also worked for the Sheffield Telephone Co. and the Canaan, Conn., post office, and owned and operated the Canaan Taxi Co. She was active in community affairs as a member of the Canaan Ambulance Squad, the School Board and School Building Committee in Canaan; a member of the Building Committee for the Mount Everett Regional School; secretary and vice president of the Sheffield Historical Society; a weekly volunteer at the Family History Center and at the Old Parish Community Food Kitchen. She was secretary for the Sheffield Planning Board and a reporter for the Sheffield Times. Her husband, William Arvon Griffiths of Pontypridd, South Glamorgan, Wales, whom she married Sept. 9, 1941, died in 1994. She leaves three daughters, Gail August of West Palm Beach, Fla., Janet Stanton, a Sheffield selectwoman, and Susan Telensky of Sheffield; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by another daughter, Carol Olson, who died Jan. 8, 2003. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Eleanor Hughes Griffiths, 83, of Hewins Street, died Wednesday evening, June 11, 2003, at Fairview Hospital. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, June 14, 2003, at 1:30 at Old Parish Church in Sheffield, with the Rev. Arthur Kaufman officiating. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends today, from 4 until 7, at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. She is survived by her daughters, Gail August of West Palm Beach, Fla., Janet Stanton and Susan Telensky, both of Sheffield; four grandchildren, Sheri Dunham of Steven’s Point, Wis., Krista Stanton of New York, Patrick Stanton VanSant of Great Barrington and William Skarupa of Torrington, Conn., and six great-grandchildren, Clint Brent, Amanda and Rebecca Dunham of Steven’s Point, Alexander and William VanSant of Great Barrington, and Ryan Thomas Marston of Torrington. She was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Olson, who died Jan. 8, 2003.
