Wayne W. Mickle

Wayne W. Mickle, 48, of 45 Garland Ave. died Friday at an encampment in Missoula, Mont., of an apparent heart attack. He was working with the Massachusetts Wildfire Crew battling forest fires there. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 29, 1954, son of Francis and Mildred Goetz Mickle, was a 1971 graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown. He also had resided in Lanesboro. Mr. Mickle was a forest fire patrolman with the Bureau of Forest Fire Control, state Department of Conservation and Recreation. He had been in fire control for 27 years and had been assigned to Pittsfield State Forest. In 2000, he was among a group of firefighters honored at the Statehouse by state and federal officials for fighting the severe blazes in Idaho, Montana, Texas and Wyoming that year. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. An avid softball player, he played in several leagues in the area, including at the Berkshire County softball complex. He and his wife, the former Leslie Elworthy, were married Oct. 17, 1981, on Mount Greylock. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Matthew E. Mickle of Pittsfield, Patrick W. Mickle of Lanesboro and Andrew F. Mickle, at home; a daughter, Megan M. Mickle at home; two brothers, Robert Pruyneand Francis Mickle, both of Lanesboro; a sister, Barbara Proper of Cheshire, and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Wayne W. Mickle, 48, died in Missoula, Mont., on Friday, Aug. 15, 2003. Beloved grandfather to Patrick, Brendan and Devin Mickle. The funeral will be Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 11 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield. Calling hours will be Monday, Aug. 18, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism in care of the funeral home.
