Thomas M. Torrey

Thomas M. Torrey, 91, of 144 Middlefield Road died Saturday at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided since June 16. Born in Peru on March 20, 1912, son of Thomas E. and Matie Hathaway Torrey, he attended Peru and Cummington schools. He was employed on the family farm and then at Crane & Co. and Byron Weston in Dalton from 1950 to 1973 as a trimmer. He was a member of the Peru Congregational Church, where he had served as organist for several years. He was a 50-year member and past master of Globe Lodge AF & AM and a member and past master of the Hinsdale Grange 19, where he had also served as chaplain. His wife, the former Ruth Cottrell, whom he married on April 24, 1949, died in 1951. He leaves one son, Thomas M. Torrey of Hugoton, Kan., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Thomas M. Torrey will be on Saturday at 10 at the Peru Congregational Church, with the Rev. Luther Pierce officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Street Cemetery in Hinsdale. Calling hours will be on Friday from 4 to 7 at the BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Dalton. Globe Lodge will hold a Masonic service at 7 at the funeral home. Among survivors are his grandchildren Brian Torrey and Lisa Russ and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth F. Torrey, on Aug. 4, 2003. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Peru Congregational Church in care of the funeral home at 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
