William A. Atwood

William A. Atwood, 71, of 12 Copley Terrace died yesterday at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided for a few days. Born in Chelsea on Feb. 22, 1932, son of Arthur and Gertrude Willmott Atwood, he was a graduate of Somerville High School. He moved Pittsfield in 1996, after living in Marco Island, Fla., for four years. A decorated Army veteran of the Korean War, he served for four years as a paratrooper and attained the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Atwood was a police officer in Andover for 22 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Massachusetts Retired Police Association and Disabled American Veterans. He leaves his wife, the former Marjory Caulk, whom he married July 6, 1966, in Moultonborough, N.H.; five sons, Michael Atwood of Andover, Christopher Atwood of Pittsfield, John Atwood and Paul Atwood, both of Salem, N.H., and William Atwood Jr. of Layton, Utah; four daughters, Linda DiCarlo of Pittsfield, and Donna Atwood, Deborah Atwood and Shirley Atwood, all of Salem, N.H.; three stepsons, Arthur DuFault of Peoria, Ill., Robert DuFault of Englewood, Ohio, and Daniel DuFault of Marco Island; a stepdaughter, Carolyn DiCarlo of Pittsfield; 27 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Another son, Alan Atwood, died in 1988. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William A. Atwood, who died Sept. 6, 2003, in Pittsfield, will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 4 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Dr. Robert Rennie, rector of First Baptist Church of Pittsfield. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 2 until the time of the service at 4. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Media Ministry at First Baptist Church of Pittsfield in care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Mr. Atwood received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars.
