Paul Rapelye Van Mater Jr

Paul Rapelye Van Mater Jr., 78, of 11 Moore’s Road died yesterday morning at home. Born in Summit, N.J., on April 25, 1925, son of Paul Rapelye Van Mater Sr. and Rose Barbara Hoskings Van Mater, he attended schools there and graduated from Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, N.J. He also was a 1947 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He studied at Rutgers University and completed his doctorate in naval engineering and naval architecture at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He moved to the town of Florida in 2000. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as an officer. Mr. Van Mater was a consultant for several naval engineering firms until his retirement in 1993. Earlier, he was a professor for several years at the Naval Academy. He had attended the Naval Academy Chapel. He was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and enjoyed traveling. His wife, the former Margaret Ann Roche, whom he married in 1951 in the Naval Academy Chapel, died Dec. 18, 1993. He leaves two daughters, Margaret Rose Van Peterson of the town of Florida and Susan Diane Dembrow of Silver Springs, Md.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- An outdoor service in celebration of Dr. Paul Van Mater Jr.’s life will take place Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1:30 in front of his residence at 11 Moore’s Road in Florida. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Florida Council on Aging or to the Sisters of St. Joseph in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include five grandchildren, Crystal Dembrow and Danielle Dembrow of Silver Spring, Calvin R. Van Peterson of Florida, Tamara Obendorffer of Shepardstown, W.Va., and Calvin H. Peterson III of Gainesville, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren, Quint, Victoria, Kenneth and Philip Obendorffer.
