William E. Frisbie

William E. Frisbie, 91, of 434 Main St. died yesterday at home. He was the longtime road superintendent and special police officer, and was active on town boards. Born in Litchfield, Conn., on Sept. 26, 1912, son of Frank and Elsie Parker Frisbie, he was educated in schools there. He moved to Becket at age 16. Mr. Frisbie was head of the town Department of Public Works for 17 years, overseeing its growth from two secondhand pieces of equipment to more than $150,000 in graders, plows, pickups and other eguipment by the time he retired in 1977. He first worked at the former Bancroft Paper Mill for 31 years, and was the shipping clerk when the mill closed in 1958. He worked for several years for the W.E. Williams asphalt plant in Lenox Dale. He also operated his farm for many years, until the 1990s. He served on the town's Public Welfare Board from 1941 until 1967, and also served on the School, Finance and Bylaw committees. He and his wife, the former Malvina R. Mitchell, would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary Nov. 27. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Faith E. Rock and Rita M. Furlong, both of Becket, and Susan E. Sprissler of West Roxbury; a sister, Gertrude Clarke of Bantam, Conn.; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. A daughter, Edith A. Gero, died in 1988. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William Frisbie will be conducted Friday at 11 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee by the Rev. Don Vincent, interim pastor of First Congregational Church of Becket Center. Burial will follow in Becket Center Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
