Heide E. Hazzard

Heide E. Hazzard, 64, of Belford, N.J., died Friday at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, N.J. She had lived in Massachusetts and moved to Belford 24 years ago. Born on April 6, 1939, in Kaislauten, Germany, daughter of Frederick and Antonia Barth Fleischmann, she came with her family to the United States at age 13 and attended schools on Staten Island, graduating from high school there. She moved to Great Barrington in the mid-1960s and to Belford 24 years ago. Ms. Hazzard was a bakery manager for the ShopRite Supermarket in Hazlet, N.J., where she had worked for many years, retiring in 2002. Her longtime companion, Thomas DiCapua, died this year. She leaves two sons, former Great Barrington Selectman David A. Smith Jr. of Sheffield and Robert Smith of Great Barrington; two daughters, Christine Douglass of Lee and Susan Butler of Middletown, N.J.; a sister, Trudy Lambert of Hazlet; two brothers, Karl Fleischmann of Manalapan, N.J., and Rolf Fleischmann of Hobart, N.Y., and eight grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Heide E. Hazzard, who died Dec. 19, 2003, will be Saturday, Dec. 27, at 10 at JOHN F. PFLEGER FUNERAL HOME, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown, N.J., followed by entombment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Friday, Dec. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the grandchildren's scholarship fund, 15 Morford Road, Middletown, N.J. Letters of condolence may be e-mailed to Pflegerfh@aol.com. Survivors include her daughters-in-law, Jeanne and Cheryl; sons-in-law, David Douglass and Vernon Butler; granddaughters, Robin, Rachel, Christina , Samantha , Elizabeth and Kelly Smith, and grandsons, Anthony Smith and Michael Butler. Ms. Hazzard was predeceased a sister, Esther Morio, in 1993.
