Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Cushing Bosworth Snider

Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Cushing Bosworth Snider, 92, of 300 Hot Spring Road, Montecito, Calif., formerly of South Egremont, died yesterday in Santa Barbara, Calif. Born in New York City on Sept. 28, 1911, son of Henry Justus Cushing Jr. and Roxy Boardman Cushing, he and his family moved to Albany, N.Y., in 1920 after his mother died, and his two great-aunts, Lucy Russ Walker and Mary Patterson Russ, helped raise him. He was a 1930 graduate of the Albany Academy and a 1934 graduate of Amherst College. He retired to South Egremont in 1968 and moved to Montecito in 1989. He was founder and president of Newburgh (N.Y.) Personal Loan Corp. from 1936 to 1951. An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1942 and promoted to major in May 1944. Stationed at the Pentagon, he was in charge of the allocation and distribution of bombers and their crews, and for the number of bombers to be produced. He sold his company in 1951 and re-enlisted, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. A decorated veteran, his final assignment was commander of the 602nd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron in Giebelstadt, West Germany. He was a member of All Saints by the Sea Episcopal Church in Montecito, the Reserve Officers Association of the United States, and the 75th Air Depot Wing Association. He had been a member of the Fort Orange Club in Albany since 1934, and of the Hudson River Lodge 309 F&AM for more than 60 years. He also had been active in community organizations in and Newburgh and Washingtonville N.Y. He married the former Elsa Marjorie Bold in 1936; they were later divorced. His wife, the former Rosalie Marguerite Heller Lee, whom he married June 30, 1955, in Vacaville, Calif., is deceased. He leaves a daughter, Carole S. McDermott of Newburgh; a sister, Suzanne Snow of Birmingham, Ala., two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Lt. Col. Cushing B. Snider will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 27, at 10 at WHITE & VENUTO FUNERAL HOME, 188 North Plank Road, Newburgh, N.Y., by his grandson, the Rev. Russ McDermott. Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Way of Orange County, 4 Matthews St., Goshen, NY 10924. Survivors also include his son-in-law, David McDermott; his brother-in-law, Victor Snow; his grandson's wife, Jennifer McDermott of Liverpool, N.Y.; his granddaughter and spouse Stacie M. and Richard DeSalvo of Danvers; four great-grandchildren, David, Seth, Susanna and Stephen McDermott of Liverpool, N.Y.; a niece, Nancy Snow; grandnieces Jessica, Jacqueline and Jennifer Snow, and grandnephews Stuart Jr., Daniel and Dustin Snow.
