Margaret M. Flaherty

Margaret M. Flaherty, 96, formerly of 209 Mohawk Forest Blvd., died yesterday at North Adams Commons, where she had resided for many years. Born in North Adams on June 15, 1907, daughter of Michael B. and Margaret McGrath Flaherty, she graduated from Drury High School in 1925. A decorated Army veteran of World War II, she served as a first lieutenant and general-duty nurse in the Pacific theater, including in the Philippines, for which she received a service star. After her military career, Miss Flaherty moved to New York City to complete her nursing training. She was employed as a registered nurse at hospitals in New York City and as a private-duty nurse in New Jersey until retiring and returning to North Adams. She was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of the Mary Spitzer Center and AARP. She leaves nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Margaret M. Flaherty, RN, who died Dec. 29, 2003, will be Friday at 1 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St. North Adams. Burial with military honors will follow in Southview Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for the North Adams Commons Activities Fund through the funeral home. She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters, John Flaherty, Fred Flaherty, Adm. Michael Flaherty, Marion Flaherty, Helen Larsson and Elsie Clark. Survivors include several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
