Leona Clara Curry

Leona Clara Curry, 97, of 119 East Park Terrace died yesterday morning at Providence Care Center of Lenox, where she had resided for 18 months. Born in Cohoes, N.Y., on April 8, 1906, daughter of Urgel and Arzalie Thibadeau Therrien, she moved with her family to Pittsfield in 1910 and attended local schools. She received a degree in accounting from the former Berkshire Business College. During World War II, she volunteered as a seamstress for the Red Cross. She also had been employed as a winder at GE for several years. A professional pianist, Mrs. Curry taught piano for many years and played in local bands. She was known for her Japanese tapestry and embroidery work. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. Her former husband, John Ferriter, whom she married in 1934, is deceased. Her husband, Joseph F. Curry, whom she married May 28, 1936, died in November 1979. She leaves a son, Edmond L. Ferriter of Pittsfield; a daughter, Leona R. Laughran-Serafino of Pittsfield; a nephew, whom she raised, Leo H. Layden of Pittsfield, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Leona C. Curry, 97, who died Dec. 30, 2003, will be Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 9:30 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Mary's Church by the Rev. Paul A. Bombardier, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home Saturday from 9 to 9:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St. She also is survived by her beloved grandchildren who received her unconditional love and understanding, Laurie Altsman, Michael Ferriter, Robert Ferriter, Jodi Welch, Edmond Leo Ferriter Jr., Patrick Laughran and Joy Vasile; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Andrew Altsman, Thomas and James Welch, Casey and Christopher Ferriter, Jarret, Emily and Robert Ferriter Jr., Colleen, Naomi and Kalib Laughran. Leona also will be sadly missed by her son-in-law, Patrick Serafino, and by Wendy Ferriter, James Welch, Tara Ferriter, Kathleen Laughran and Peter Vasile. Also by her nephew, Leo H. Layden, whom she raised. She was predeceased by a grandson, Jarret Ferriter in June 1979; five brothers, Alphie, Albert, William, Lionel and Emile Therrien, and three sisters, Lenore Janis, Mamie Cusack and Alma Poulton.
